On May 22, 1987, a boy was born in Belgrade. Depite growing up in war ravaged Serbia, he later went on to become one of the most celebrated tennis players in the world. This is the story of none other than Novak Djokovic.
He began playing tennis at the age of four, when his parents gave him a mini-racket and a soft foam ball. At the age of six, Djokovic was discovered by Yugoslav tennis player Jelena Genčić, who stated: "This is the greatest talent I have seen since Monica Seles." Owing to his potential, Jelena suggested Novak move to Pilić tennis academy in Germany, where he spent four years. He began his international career at the age of fourteen, winning European championships in singles, doubles and team competition. In 2003, Novak turned professional by entering the ATP tour.
At the time when Novak started playing professionally, Roger Federer was already an established tennis player. Roger managed to end years 2004-2007 as World No. 1. During this period, Rafael Nadal had also started coming at the top of the leaderboard. The duo dominated the world of tennis by collectively finishing the years 2004-2010 as World No. 1. Dethroning the duo and reaching the top of the rankings was a seemingly impossible task at the time. Nonetheless, Djokovic, constantly improving and playing consistently, ascended quickly to World No. 1, winning three out of the four majors in 2011. It was at this point that Nadal declared that his joint dominance with Federer had culminated. This resulted in the coining of the term 'Big Three'.
However, the path to the pinnacle was arduous for Novak Djokovic. After winning Wimbledon, his first major, in 2008, his progress plateaued for almost three years. He had to prove himself time and again to outwit Roger and Rafael, considered one of the greatest players of all time. Novak's perseverance ultimately helped him attain this herculean achievement.
Undoubtedly, for a sport as physically demanding as tennis, fitness is paramount. Novak follows a rigorous exercise regime. Not only does he work out in the gym, but also engages in swimming, cycling and other creative activities to keep himself fit. He has also implemented meditation and yoga in his routine. One key characteristic that makes him stand out is his ability to stretch. His flexibility allows him to hit shots from unimaginable positions and makes him one of the best returners and defenders. He is considered by many the fittest of the Big Three and still plays tennis without showing any sign of physical degeneration, despite being 35 years old.
During the initial phase of his career, the tennis community was already polarized in terms of following. Fans were either supporters of Federer or Nadal. Hence, Novak was perceived as an outsider who had started challenging their idols. Till date, his fan following does not come close to that of Federer's or Nadal's. However, Novak's mental toughness has equipped him to play at his best despite not receiving much support. Moreover, he has even been subject to hostile atmospheres at the Grand Slams and other major tournaments, to the extent that spectators used to clap when he made mistakes. I vividly remember in one post-match interview, he told the reporters that when the crowd was cheering - 'Roger, Roger, Roger', he heard 'Novak, Novak, Novak'. This is just one example that demonstrates his emotional resilience and grit.
Djokovic has had quite a few painful defeats in his career, defeats that would leave many devastated. Nevertheless, he still manages to rebound. There have been numerous instances in which Djokovic was 2 sets down, yet he found ways to turn the tables. Majority of the credit for this commendable ability goes to his willingness to adapt, both on and off court. Whenever he finds himself in a tough situation, he remains composed and is able to adapt quickly.
With a career spanning nearly two decades, Novak stands alone in many of his achievements. Without getting into the never ending debate of who the G.O.A.T (Greatest of all-time) is, below are some exceptional records held by the Serb:
1. 373 weeks as World No. 1
2. Double career Golden Masters - He is the only player to complete a collection of all nine Masters series events, and that too twice.
3. In his 2015 season, Novak defeated all Top-10 players.
4. He has won 9 Australian Open titles, the most every by a man or woman.
5. In 2016, Novak accumulated 16,950 points, the most points ever in an ATP tour season.
The above life story underscores the illustrious career of Novak Djokovic and the qualities that have helped him achieve the extraordinary. Novak is the reason I became a fan of the sport. He is my role model. Emulating his values and life principles can put anyone on the path to success.
I really hope that I can someday fulfill my dream of seeing Novak play in person.
Idemo Nole! Keep attaining new heights.
